Avaya SIP Telephony Solutions Receive "Well-Connected Award" from Network Computing Magazine Avaya Inc. today announced that its Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) telephony solutions have received a Digital Convergence "Well-Connected Award" from Network Computing magazine, an industry-leading publication for information technology and networking professionals. The award honours the best technology products and services evaluated during the past year by the Network Computing Real-World Labs®. "The Well-Connected Awards are the only industry awards given by technologists based on real-world product testing and evaluation. These awards take the pulse of the technology industry and reflect the best of what IT has to offer "This is an important distinction from any other award program - the products selected in the Well-Connected awards are unique because they have been graded with the same criteria IT professionals use to make purchasing decisions - truly the most outstanding products and services available." In addition to winning a Well-Connected Award for its SIP solutions, Avaya was a finalist in the Digital Convergence category for the Best VoIP Package. After extensive laboratory testing and evaluation in March, Avaya SIP solutions received an "Editor's Choice Award" from Network Computing. The magazine cited Avaya for providing the best interoperability with third-party phones and for the best balance of features and price. This testing served as the basis for Avaya's receipt of the Well-Connected Award. SIP is a standards-based IP telephony signalling language that facilitates seamless interoperability among various media, including audio, video, instant messaging and presence. The Avaya SIP solution tested by the publication includes Avaya Communication Manager, the company's flagship IP telephony software, supported by an Avaya S8300 Media Server and G700 Media Gateway. This included an Avaya Converged Communications Server, which extends SIP support to this platform and delivers automatic call distribution capabilities, voicemail, instant messaging, presence and unified messaging capabilities to SIP endpoints. To demonstrate interoperability, Avaya's solution was tested with third-party desktop phones and softphones from a variety of vendors. Network Computing said Avaya delivered the most mature and feature-rich management interface for "an extensive administrative tool-set." Test centre personnel managed the Avaya media server using an Avaya Site Administration application, which features both a graphical and a command line user interface for systems administration. The Avaya Converged Communications Server was managed via two Web pages - one configured for user and resource administration and another for server maintenance. On the application side, Network Computing noted the Avaya IP Softphone enabled by Communication Manager emulates all of the features of a desktop phone on a PC or laptop computer and opens up "potential killer applications" - including secure instant messaging and presence management to see who is online and available, as well as logging and archiving capabilities to comply with industry regulations. "We especially liked the Avaya Extension to Cellular option for mobile employees who primarily use cell phones," the publication noted. "Users can map their desktop phone and cell phone together as a single extension, which means all incoming calls ring both phones and outgoing calls appear as if they're initiated by the desk set."
