Q3 PBX line shipments dominated by IP convergence
The InfoTrack for Enterprise Communications (IEC) 3Q06 Report reveals IP convergence dominated global PBX line shipments for 3Q06, at 73% of the growing $14bn annual market. Traditional PBX and key/hybrid systems evenly split the remaining shipments, with PBX bringing in twice the revenues of key/hybrid.
Outside of the United States, IP shipments lead PBX and key/hybrid lines with 70% of the 3Q06 market. Traditional PBX sales are more than double those for key/hybrid. Within the United States, the trend toward IP convergence is more pronounced, at 80%, with key/hybrid representing the majority of remaining shipments and revenue.
“While IP technology has replaced the traditional PBX in the United States, affordable key/hybrid systems remain attractive options for small business, and many key systems now offer IP connectivity,” says Susan Hobart, vice president and senior program director at InfoTech.
Only six players account for almost 80 percent of global IPT manufacturer revenue: Avaya, Siemens, Cisco, Alcatel, Nortel and NEC. In addition to large IP systems, all of the major manufacturers now offer small versions that can target small/mid-size businesses in emerging economies and which are enabling acceleration of local infrastructure growth.
“Competition has changed, it’s truly global, and the largest growth segments are in new markets. Such emerging global markets as China, India and Russia represent huge growth opportunities,” adds Hobart. “The major players continue to increase their investments in marketing, sales and partnerships aimed at building presence in these markets, and they often face off with an increasing number of local competitors.”
InfoTech primary research shows that 60% of Russian enterprise-telephony-line shipments derive from domestic production by either local or foreign-based manufacturers.
