Snapshot: Ofcom 's Telecommunications Market Data Update Q3 2008

Ofcom has released its Telecommunications Market Data Update Q3 2008, highlighting some of the key trends emerging this quarter.

Total fixed calls and access revenues fell by 2% during the quarter to £2.3bn. BT's share of total fixed-line revenues was 57.9% during the period, 4.1% lower than it had been a year previously. Total residential call volumes in Q3 2008 were 9% lower than in Q3 2007, while total business call volumes fell by 5% over the same period. The total number of fixed lines fell by 36,000 to 33.5m during the quarter.

The number of residential and SME broadband connections increased by 322,000 during the quarter to 16.9m. The number of broadband connections provided using local loop unbundling (LLU) increased by 7% during the quarter to exceed 5 million for the first time.

Total revenue across the four largest mobile network operators increased by 1.5% in Q3 2008 compared to the previous quarter. Revenue from calls and other charges grew by 2.3%, in contrast to revenue from SMS and MMS, which fell by 2%. UK call volumes across the four largest mobile operators declined by 0.05% compared to the previous quarter, the first quarter-on-quarter fall since Q1 2005.

Roaming call volumes increased by 11% year-on-year to 596 million minutes in Q3 2008. Over the same period, the number of outgoing international call minutes increased by 14% to just under 450 million minutes.

Total subscribers grew by 1.2% during the quarter to 68.2 million, driven mainly by contract subscriptions which accounted for 85% of net connections during the period.
